What Size Chiller for a Jacketed Glass Reactor?

The chiller (or heating-cooling integrated unit) paired with a jacketed glass reactor has to remove your process heat at the working temperature — and cooling capacity falls as the set point drops. This guide gives the jacket volume for each reactor size, the outer-circulation port sizes, and the source-provided cooling-capacity data of the recirculating chiller and heating-cooling integrated unit range at room temperature, 0 °C and the lowest point, taken from the UnionClay technical documentation for each model.

Step 1: Look Up the Jacket Volume

The jacket is the annular space between the inner and outer glass walls; its volume is the thermal mass your chiller must cool first. Figures from the UnionClay parameter sheets:

Reactor sizeApproximate jacket volume
20 Lapprox. 6 L
30 Lapprox. 9 L
50 Lapprox. 15 L
100 Lapprox. 30 L
150 Lapprox. 45 L
200 Lapprox. 60 L

Step 2: Match the Outer-Circulation Port

  • DN15 port on models of 30 L and below.
  • DN20 port on models of 50 L and above.

Confirm the port size before ordering hoses and fittings so the chiller loop connects without adapters.

Step 3: Compare Cooling Capacity at Your Working Temperature

Capacity is not one number: every model below lists the source-provided cooling capacity at room temperature, at 0 °C and at its lowest point. Compare the figure at your working temperature against your process heat load. A dash (—) marks lowest-point figures under internal confirmation; ask us for the current value.

Selection Checklist

  • Reactor size → jacket volume (Step 1).
  • Working temperature → the capacity column to read (Step 3).
  • Process heat load → must stay below the capacity figure at the working temperature.
  • Outer-circulation port → DN15 or DN20 (Step 2).
  • Mains supply and installation space → listed on each product page.

Pairing Questions

What size chiller do I need for a 50 L jacketed reactor?

A 50 L reactor has a jacket volume of approx. 15 L and a DN20 port. At 0 °C the DLSB-50/30 sealed chiller is listed at 9.3 kW and the DLSB-50/40 sealed model at 10.5 kW; compare those figures with your process heat load at the working temperature.

Why is the lowest-temperature cell missing for some models?

Some −40 °C lowest-point figures are under internal confirmation because source documents disagree; those cells are marked — rather than publishing an unconfirmed value. Ask us through the contact page for the current figure.

Do I have to match the DN port exactly?

The port size (DN15 up to 30 L, DN20 from 50 L) is fixed by the reactor model; confirm it before ordering hoses and fittings.
